The Basics: Concealer

the basics - skincare, foundation.

Concealer is used to mask dark circles, age spots, large pores, and other small blemishes visible on the skin. It is similar to foundation, but thicker and used to hide different pigments by blending the imperfection into the surrounding skin tone. You can either use concealer before you apply your foundation or after - it's up to you. I typically use concealer after foundation because I like to use as little as possible and so I will only use it on areas that my foundation doesn't provide enough coverage for.

There are two main types of concealer - coverage and illuminating. The concealer you want to use for coverage should match your foundation/skin tone and blend out but still provide coverage over the foundation. Whereas a concealer intended for illuminating should be one shade lighter than the skin tone and used in areas you want to highlight - the under-eye area, down the bridge of the nose, cupids bow and possibly even the chin. This type of concealer typically doesn't provide coverage because it has a lighter consistency. Tip: you should set your concealer with a translucent powder, no matter what type it is.

Concealer should be an essential in everybody's makeup bag - they're so useful! You can use it to hide dark circles; any blemishes or redness; even out the complexion when you don't want to wear any foundation; to define your eyebrows; to clean up your eyeliner.. the possibilities are endless!

  1. Great post! Concealer is def a must for me. My dark circles aren't huge, but I still can't go without using concealer. I love my nars concealer the best! Great Post. I also apply my concealer after foundation.

  2. I'm always on the hunt for new concealers because I love trying them. I tend to have a problem with them creasing even when set with powder and its really frustrating but my Collection one rarely does it to me. I tend to use a coverage concealer before my foundation and then an illuminator on top of that in certain places and it works wonders for me!x
